Sky1 will air Caprica, the much-anticipated two hour prequel to Battlestar Galactica from executive producers Ronald D. Moore and David Eick.

As BATTLESTAR GALACTICA heads into its fourth and final season, CAPRICA will expand on the Galactica world and get deeper into the origins of the story whilst promising to deliver more of the passion, intrigue, political backbiting, family conflict and hardcore action that fans have come to love.

Set 50 years before BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, CAPRICA follows two rival families – the Graystones and the Adamas. Bound together by tragedy, their ensuing struggle will determine the fate of the 12 Colonies.

CAPRICA is a society rife with advanced technology. Little do they know they are trembling on the brink of the creation of the first CYLON (cybernetic life-form node).

The Graystones and Adamas come from different cultures and wildly different socio-economic backgrounds. Daniel Graystone (Eric Stoltz, The Mask, Pulp Fiction) is a computer genius and the leading businessman of the 12 Colonies. His wife, Amanda Graystone (Paula Malcolmson, Deadwood, ER) is an elite neurosurgeon. Joseph Adama (Esai Morales, NYPD Blue) is an immigrant, a lawyer with ties to the mob, and a father who is desperate to reconnect with his estranged son, William (Sina Najafi).

Their bitter rivalry will bring the end of life as they know it. Their children are the future.

When I think about where we are a species, and a society, I now also think about what we’ve do

When I think about where we are a species, and a society, I now also think about what we've done to get here, especially what we've given up to get here. I look to television and other fiction for some examples. In House, my most recent most-watched tv show, the doctors will sometimes sacrifice one patient to save another, or a patient's arm to save the rest of him, saving his life but at great cost. In Farscape, John sacrafices his only chance of returning to Earth in order to save it from militant alien races. In Battlestar Galactica, the humans, on several occasions, abandoned countless other human survivors to protect themselves the rest of the human race. Without those sacrifices, the human race would have ended.

The most extreme example is HALO. The members of the top secret levels of the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI), Section 3 sacrificed much throughout the SPARTAN programs, and multiple battles and engagements. They killed other humans to steal nukes from them to fight the Covenant. They used fully staffed civilian space stations as expendable shields to protect more tactically relevant ships. The SPARTAN-II program was the worst, though. They kidnapped 67 six-year-old children from their parents, replacing them with dying flash clones. Of those 67, only 35 survived healthily. Many were killed by the enhancements that were required of the program. Others went brain dead or blind or got ALS, and some were so horribly misshapen that they had to live the rest of their so-called "lives" in a neutrally buoyant tank.

Master Chief Petty Officer John 117 of the UNMC understood sacrafice the most. As leader of the SPARTANS, he had to live with half of his squad dying from the mutations. He was taught early in his carreer that there is a difference between wasting lives and spending lives. We as Americans today barely understand that. But perhaps it is for the best. The distinction is harder to make the lower the odds, and national security is a much lower priority than perservation of our entire species. I hope we never have to make the sacrafices described in fiction, but that we have the courage to do so, should the need arise.

Commander Lee 'Apollo' Adama: Remember what Roslin said. Our FIRST responsibility is the survival of humanity. We can't lose sight of that. Over the last year, we've lost sight of almost everything... we got soft. But if we go back to New Caprica now... and we lose, it's over. Humanity just stops. Admiral's stars don't give you the right to make that gamble.

If you haven't seen the mid-season finale, Revelations, please check it out. Worth every second.

Spoilers Ahead

Besides being arguably the best ass kicking episode we've seen since Season 2, the mid-season finale of Battlestar Galactica threw a major plot twist at fans.

So, surprisingly, the fleet and the cyclons skip to Earth hand-in-hand, after an newly formed alliance that about as stable as Lindsay Lohan without her happy pills. The humans can't trust the cylons because, after all, the machines nuked their homeworlds. The cylons can't trust the humans because...well, the humans will never forgive the toaster for nuking said homeworlds. See the conundrum. So they get to Earth and there's no juicy nectarines, gushing springs or chewy bounding deer meat—just soupy fallout stew and radioactive dirt. Sucks for them.

Seriously, this ep raised more questions than answers. I mean, where do the humans and the cylons go from here? And frankly, what's the payoff gonna be now? To reiterate the sentiments of Admiral Adama, the new "cooperation"between the humans and cylons is tenuous. Adama knows once the chips are down both parties' fears will implode under the pressure. It's only a matter of time before Athena off and guts another Six with a slug or Tyrol finds out exactly who (Tory) airlocked his wife, Cally.

One problem I had with Revelations is the shady non-reveal of the final cylon. D'Anna (3) claimed to know the identities of the final five cylons, but when it came time to reveal the fifth cylon, only stated that the fifth was not onboard Galactica. Does that mean the fifth is on another ship? Is the fifth dead? Very shady.

Alas, the show tagline, All Will Be Revealed will have to wait until sometime after January when the show returns. Here's a round-up of some of the reviews for Revelations.

BSG fans no doubt delighted at the 2008 season finale where all sorts of insane tensions mount between humans and Cylons.

And Xena (oops, I mean Cylon number Three), that ever-enchanting toaster, offers an innocent civilian up to death before a truce is made between humans and Cylons.

Interesting that the truce isn't achieved by brute force but by human and Cylon goodwill, along with President Apollo's diplomacy.

All round great job... kudos to all concerned in the production.

Except for one thing... the final scene where Earth is trashed? Rod Serling did it way better.

Last night I watched the new magically recut magical magic new version of Blade Runner, and while it was fun to see Adama as a young and kinda freaky-looking man I could not see any obvious difference between this and the director's cut. It raised a tweak on my cynicism radar, particularly when I remembered the email I got from amazon.co.uk with a note saying they had completely remade the film from the bits on the cutting room floor. Which they (of Blade Runner rights ownership) obviously haven't so I can only conclude they are screwing me for cash.

Cynicism radar can also help you identify people as those who may be fine at acquaintence but are not to be relied on in crises. Like those who think wife beating is a private matter and nothing to bother the police with, and leaving a friend on the street is ok if you're trying to patch things up with a partner. Ok those are fairly obvious things but they confirmed to me that people I'd already chosen not to trust deserved my lack of faith.

I have long had a problem with a clogged up thought process. So far I have tried whining about it, writing this blog and ritual magic to help the problem, and I'm now starting to see how things I do could have been better if I'd thought about it more at the time. Which sucks but is a start so I'm not going to beat myself up about it. Want to hear a really sick cliche? I have to stop wanting to do things and start doing things. I hate all that self-help life-coaching positivity-mantra bull-shit. It's sickening and twee and reeks of desperate weakness - probably why women are encouraged to do it. That pisses me off too: women be strong and do something for yourself by acting as pathetic as possible! I think the 12.99 that crappy book costs would be better spent on a big creamy coffee treat and an epic piece of cake. None of that skinny latte skinny muffin shit neither - I'm on to you starbucks, you with your fake fair trade 'but we have to screw the africans or where will our profit come from?' attitude.

Speaking of attitude, how badass is the angry stripping woman?:

http://commentisfree.guardian.co.uk/cath_elliott/2008/05/so_angry_i_could_strip.html

Considering I've been stared at, honked at, shouted at, talked at, curbed crawled, asked inappropriate questions about my sexual history and had my arse groped at a bus stop at lunchtime I can appreciate this problem. I do not dress to be leched at and I ain't even that pretty, though I'm young and well-endowed. What I find most insane about this article is the number of responders implying that the author is just jealous because she's not much to look at and probably doesn't get this sort of attention. Again, I call bullshit. I feel a deep well of pity for all women who enjoy the greasy stares of grotesque men. And before anyone says it even if George Clooney or Johnny Depp asked me to get my tits out all they would see is my angry face.

Edit: I forgot to add that I love the Mary Wollstonecraft quote at the end of that article. If only my cage were so shiny #sigh#

"Sine Qua Non"

May 30th, 2008

Yes, you're not seeing things: that date above is in the future, which means that I have perfected the art of time travel. Or, more accurately, I've perfected the art of hijacking a British satellite feed in order to watch this week's episode of Battlestar Galactica three days before it airs on this continent.

Yes, SkyOne is now three days ahead due to the Memorial Day holiday break on Sci-Fi, which is good news for those of us able to see it early. Now, I was trying to decide whether to write a review now or later for this one, and know that my decision to focus on the former is largely due to a desire to discuss it while it is still fresh in my mind; I know how hard it will be for those of you on feeds to resist the temptation to read before you watch, and I apologize for the trouble.

However, there's a lot to talk about here, some of which I found interesting and some which, well, I didn't. Plus, the return of a much-loved character that, although engaging, ultimately falls in the latter category...I think.

So, head below the jump for thoughts and spoilers...and, if you're not coming back until Saturday, see you then!

"Sine Qua Non" is an episode about losing control, or losing some element which is integral to existence. The latin meaning of the phrase, at least according to my extensive knowledge of using Wikipedia, is "without which (there is) nothing." For various characters in our universe, this phrase has distinct meaning, and the episode does a strong job of emphasizing this fact in both subtle and broad fashions.

It centers most on Adama, who finally steps back into the role of protagonist in this episode. He's been sidelined by Kara in terms of major fleet movements since the season began, focused rather on interacting with Roslin and helping her through her ordeal. Suddenly, with Roslin jumped off with the Baseship (Which we never actually see in this episode, something I'll discuss later), Adama doesn't know what to do with himself. And, unfortunately, the rest of his world is falling apart at the same time: he goes from a stable existence to Roslin potentially being dead, Sharon breaking his trust by killing Natalie, and Tigh impregnating Caprica Six.

We'll discuss the last one first: yes, Tigh appears to have knocked up Caprica as part of their weird sexually charge fight sessions that we (thankfully, to be honest) haven't seen for a while. I honestly don't get this storyline, and never have: as a piece of plotting in Jane Espenson's Escape Velocity, it was awkward and unexplained, and its sudden disappearance complicated things further. However, now the storyline actually did have a purpose: it drives a wedge in the relationship between Tigh and Adama (for a moment, anyways), and also helps to shed further light on Tigh's journey as a Cylon.

Because there's something wrong with this scenario, which again implies that there is something different about the Final Five: according to the Cylon storylines in the first and second seasons, particularly "The Farm," this should be impossible. The inability for the existing seven Cylons to procreate was one of the central conceits that led to Sharon falling in love with Helo. Now, in that instance, the claim was that love was what allowed for Sharon to carry Hera, and that it also helped that a human was involved in the process. The same argument, at least in my mind, explains how Tyrol and Cally were able to have Nicky - with one human in the mix, you could argue that the system works.

But here, we have two Cylons procreating - now, perhaps the pregnancy is doomed, and those complications will kill Caprica and raise suspicion of Tigh (Although chances are that the fleet won't be as quick to presume the truth). However, it is also a potential red flag for Caprica - considering she knew that the Five were in her presence, that they were nearby, I would have to think that even in her strange lovestruck state (I found Tricia Helfer's performance really weird in her brief scenes, like a complete character shift had taken place in a deleted scene from the weeks previous) that she would have an acute sense of what this could mean. Either way, I'm excited to see that what appeared as an odd character beat in perhaps the season's weakest hour has developed into a return to an idea that always fascinated the Cylons, and that fits in so nicely with the episode's recurring theme.

The impact of this on Adama's psyche is far simpler: Tigh spending time with the Cylon is one thing, but frakking her is quite another. His fight with Tigh is one of the episode's finer moments, a visceral battle that smartly ties the episode to Adama's past frustration with his favourite wooden model. Both actors perform more than admirably in the setting, and it's a nice relationship to return to. I also like that, while Adama eventually comes to his senses regarding the way the loss of Roslin is skewing his perceptions, that his choice to give Tigh command is still a fascinating development for us as viewers: that a Cylon is now in charge of the journey to Earth, and that he is so frakkin' scared of it, should prove yet another fantastically disastrous and entertaining turn at the helm for Tigh.

On the other subtler beat, but along the same lines, we have Athena, who last week killed Natalie and (in Adama's eyes) caused the Cylon Baseship to jump away with their people on board. Of course, we know that this isn't true: we know that Natalie and the other Cylons had organized a betrayal long before she did so. The big questions about this storyline (Did Natalie resurrect? And are we going to get to see her wake up in the Hub and have to fight her way out?) are largely unanswered here, but we do get to see Athena's reasoning. For the record, it's not very good, and Adama throws her in the Brig for breaking his trust (Their own tenuous truce started in "Occupation/Precipice") fairly quickly. However, the newly aware Adama reunites her, at least, with her daughter, knowing that she is her meaning of sine qua non - without her, she is nothing, which was her reasoning for killing the Six despite it not being the one in her dream. I'm fine with this in the short term, as it helps to add to Adama's trauma in this episode.

As for Roslin being dead, this is clearly what bothers Adama most: the show will have to deal with their relationship, so clearly not just friendship since New Caprica, by the time the series ends, and this is really the first step in this development. Just as Roslin not finishing Searider Falcon wouldn't be a fitting end to her life, Adama knows that their relationship ending before he tells her how much she matters to him (If you prefer less sappy terms, how much of a raving lunatic he turned into when she was thought dead) would be a tragedy of sorts.

Faced with that scenario, his reactions to Athena and Tigh's betrayal are particularly song, and him sending the fleet off on a recon mission to find a warzone of sorts where the Hub was supposed to be displays his desire, and yet also his willingness to leave the fleet (and the new Interim government) defenseless and in the dark. Eddie Olmos does a great job with the transition, however, from risking the fleet in order to solve his own "sine qua non" to deciding to sit by himself in a Raptor waiting to see if the Baseship returns (which seems unlikely considering the shape of the Raptor that returned with a dead pilot). As noted above, his character has been decentralized as of late, and this is a great return to the Adama who we REALLY care about.

Which, of course, leads us to the one we do not: I don't mean to deride Lee all that much, to be fair, but by comparison Lee's exploits in government have yet to prove very rewarding from a dramatic standpoint. Now, however, we finally get to why this was all necessary: with no President, and with Adama clearly unwilling to let Zarek come to power, there is a need to find an interim president. If you've been watching the show for a while, you should have been able to figure this one out in two seconds flat: obviously, by episode's end, Lee was going to be sworn in as interim president.

First and foremost, help me out here: other than his love for Roslin clouding his judgment, why would Adama be so against Zarek that (as Lee notes) he would never allow him to be President? In this moment, sure, but I'm not convinced that Adama's past actions were nearly this derisive towards Zarek for anyone to make this presumption. Admittedly, while the Quorum has been an attempt to get at this, our internal view of the government structure tends for us to presume it is slightly more democratic than it probably is, or definitely more than it appears to be for the rest of the fleet. However, the Quorum has really only just been a point of annoyance, shrill people yelling over each other, and hasn't actually provided much lucid observation.

But, lest we complain too greatly, let's remember that this search for an interim president returns the delightful Romo Lampkin (returning guest star Mark Shepphard) to our narrative. I really like the implication that Lee has been interacting with him on a semi-regular basis since he got Baltar off the hook, and the character remains just as disarming as before. There's something about Lampkin that can cut right into an issue, so here he is certainly a strong influence on this process and on Lee's character. Now, for some, his appearance sends off alarm bells that perhaps he could be the final Cylon (possible considering his strange qualities), but his introduction is, for my two cents, purely human.

His storyline was actually sort of odd, to the point where I wondered if those people could be correct: little clues and a final reveal see that Lampkin's wife's cat has died, and that his guilt over not dying with her has him seeing the cat alive even while its corpse sits in his duffel bag. Now, for my money, the "Head Cat" doesn't indicate that he is (like Baltar) closely related to the Cylons, as it is a manifestation of a very human flaw in his past. How it manifests itself, however, is a problem for me: Lampkin's scenes with both Adamas are fabulous little pieces of acting from Shepphard, and I love having the character back, but that he actually holds Lee at gunpoint because he's disgusted by the idea of how hopeful a President he'd be is just weird. Maybe I need another viewing, but it seemed an illogical and overdramatic note to hit, and made his character seem too desperate, too dependent on Lee's wisdom to even survive.

I think my frustration is that his inevitable decision, to hail Lee as the new president, feels false. Yes, I knew it was coming just as everyone and their mother did, but it still kind of cheapens Lampkin's return when it exists purely to elevate another character to a position for which he isn't (as Lampkin's brainstorming asserted) qualified outside of being a candidate that the Admiral can't refuse. I think it's just a bad combination of a development I don't particularly enjoy, Lee ascending to this role, and a storyline featuring a tragic downfall that lacked purpose outside of manufacturing drama. It seemed too sudden to be a satisfying character development for Lampkin, so I was kind of left underwhelmed by his return overall.

But, I think a large part of that has to do with how much I preferred to see more of the elder Adama: Lampkin's scene with the Admiral was sharp where his scenes with Lee were one-sided, and I felt like there was greater purpose there. The shift of Lee to President is forced, but Adama's reconnection with reality was both necessary and a product of a long-gestating relationship or three. The result was that its strength, and the various questions central to it, kind of pushed Lee and Lampkin's interactions to the sidelines. The episode ends on a powerful image of Adama in flight gear, sitting in a Raptor all alone floating, and reading the book that Roslin will not finish until she is on her deathbed - that's what I leave the episode with, not Lee's fancy ceremony. And, well, maybe that's because Bill Adama's my "sine qua non" and Lee...well, isn't.

Cultural Observations

I did enjoy returning to Jake, the beloved resistance dog from New Caprica that Lee gave to Romo at episode's end - mainly just because of my love of dogs, and my belief that there are more pets floating around the fleet that we should see more of.

Although a lot of character omissions make a lot of sense in the episode considering that they are either on the baseship or not really necessary to the episode, Starbuck is an intriguing sort: she's on Galactica, no longer crazy, and we never see her reaction to the Baseship jumping away with her search for Earth. It's necessary to centralize Adama to the narrative, but this was her obsession and for her to just go off scrambling together a CAG seems too sober a response for someone who was so recently insane.

Next week should be an early review as well, as SkyOne stays a few days ahead, but the midseason finale on June 13th will return to an even playing field.

Be aware there are major spoilers for Sine Qua Non in this Review so if you dont want to be spoiled dont read on

One Sentence Review

A good episode but we are still left hanging from last weeks cliffhanger, and there is a pointless subplot about who should be acting president

Episode Summary (SPOILERS)

The episode opens on Galactica with Natalie being wheeled into sickbay as she dies she sees a vision of a forest. In response to shooting Natalie Athena is thrown in the brig. On colonial one, there is confusion over what is going on and Zarek assumes the presidency, this leads to a pointless subplot where Adama ignores and bypasses Zarek and Lee and Romo search for an alternate candidate and the "shocking" decision is reached to make Lee Adama the acting president as he is the only candidate acceptable to everyone. The only thing of note in this subplot is that we see Romo's cat running about yet at the end it is revealed that the cat has been dead for weeks (Romo sees the cat, Lee probably does not) and President Lee gives Romo Jake the dog (the New Caprica dog whose dog bowl was Gaeta's signal) as a payment for his help.

On Galactica Tigh talks to Caprica 6 about the Resurrection Hub and it is revealed that only the Hybrids can locate it and only after it has completed a jump (Not sure if 6 is referring to the Hybrid or the Hub), Tigh again sees Ellen as 6 asks him if he loves her. A heavily damaged raptor from the rebel baseship jumps in with no one alive on board, after finding out the Raptor was the one which shuttled Roslin over due to Adama finding Searider Falcon in it. Galactica then jumps to the raptors last location and find signs of a massive battle with damaged Vipers, baseship fragments and evidence of destroyed resurrection technology indicating the Hub has been destroyed. In sickbay Cottle tells Adama that Caprica 6 is pregnant and Adama confronts Tigh about this leading to a fight between Tigh and Adama in Adamas Quarters. Due to his feelings for Roslin, Adama keeps on making reckless decisions leading to him eventually handing control of Galactica over to Tigh while Adama takes out a raptor and waits while the fleet jumps away in search of Earth.

My Thoughts

Overall I would say that this is a good episode and there is alot of development on the Galactica side of things. It did feel that most of the developments could have been fit into half an Episode, the Lee Adama and Romo subplot is the worst offender as from the moment it was clear that Adama would not accept Zarek as president it was clear that Lee would become acting president as he is the only known viable candidate and someone as politically astute as Zarek would realise this. The only alternative to this would have been Lee going back to command Galactica after Adama announced he would quit as Lee does have prior experience of commanding a battlestar and he would be willing to work with Zarek unlike his father and his command record is better than Tighs. Moving on to Tigh, I was shocked when it was revealed he had made Caprica 6 pregnant because even though it has been predicted by posters on the BSGCAST comments boards I thought with Tigh being a cylon and Caprica 6 being a cylon that it was not possible. The Tigh and Adama scenes were as a whole handled well and there was a nice nod to the number of times that Adamas model ship has been damaged and has needed to be repaired. There was also a moment when Adama gives Tigh command that I thought that Tigh might admit to Adama that he was a cylon. The main problem with this episode is that we learn virtually nothing about what happened on the baseship, we learn that they attacked and probably destroyed the Resurrection Hub but other than that nothing. I suspect that this episode and the next were originally one episode but at somepoint in the writing process it was decided to expand it into two episodes each concentrating on one part of the plot exclusively (one episode Galactica and the other the Baseship) with the Romo/Lee presidency subplot added to Sine Qua Non. I therefore expect a similarly pointless subplot in the next episode as well and to not see the fleet unless in the last 5 minutes, they may meet up with Adama earlier than that however.

Liked

The Caprica 6 pregnancy revelation

Tigh and Adama throughout the episode

Athena being thrown in the brig

Head Lance the Cat!!

A nice continuity nod with Laird (Deck Chief from Pegasus) being mentioned by Tigh

Disliked

The whole Lee Adama and Romo subplot, it was not needed as Lee should have become President by the end of the first act

The lack of any proper information about the Rebel Baseship, Roslin and Baltar

The uselessness of the Quorum of 12

Questions Raised

Is the Rebel Baseship still intact

Did they complete their mission

How did one cylon manage to impregnate another cylon

What was going on with the Cat, was Romo projecting and did Lee see the Cat

How long will Admiral Adama stay alone on the Raptor for

How long before Athena gets out of the brig

How long will it take before Tigh declares martial law this time :-)

Episode Rating

7/10 - A good episode let down by a pointless subplot

Theories and Speculation

Firstly the fact that Tigh made Caprica 6 pregnant indicates that the final five do not have the same problem with reproducing that the Original 7 do, unless Baltar is the father and Adamas certainty it was Tigh seems to preclude that possibility. This also raises the possibility that Caprica 6 or her child could be the final cylon as labour is known to cause "Howls of Suffering". Given the amount of suffering going on this Season (Gaeta, Athena, Cally, Natalie, Starbuck, Roslin, Adama, Romo) it is also possible that the part of the Hybird Prophecy referring to suffering does not refer to the final cylon suffering but rather the suffering that everyone seems to be going through. The pregnancy revelation also brings Cally and Helo back into contention as candidates for the final cylon and of the two Cally being the better candidate given her suffering and the irony of the biggest cylon hater being a Cylon.

There is also the question of Romos cat as it is clear from Romos actions that he could see the cat, but it is not clear that Lee did not see the cat though his dialog leans towards that being the case. Was Romo projecting similar to Baltar (Head Lance the Cat) is he the final cylon? Last week Gaeta this week Romo, Ronald D Moore seems to be making as many people as possible viable candidates for the final cylon

Finally the question is raised, where is the baseship? If the mission was a sucess why didn't they jump back. If they suceeded in getting D'anna or even if they didn't as the ship was not found at the battlesite it indicates it has jump capability, therefore it should have jumped back to the fleet. I predict the reason it hasn't jumped back will be because it has found Earth.

Note: BSGCAST finally have their page up for discussion of this episode, I would recommend checking the BSGCASTs out if you havent allready

Rumormill has it that Battlestar Galactica will be doing some made for TV movies. I'm kind of stuck on the series and looking forward to the prospect of more DVDs. The idea is that while the cast/crew are still around why not shoot more footage (with a good story of course). The movies wouldn't affect the continuity of the show proper of course. Just like BSG Razor last fall.

Another show I really love did the same thing after their initial TV run ended, Stargate SG1. They stopped airing new episodes after the completion of season 10. It was the longest running science fiction television show in history (Star Trek runs 7 season at most). The second SG1 movie Stargate Continuum will be airing in late July (July 29th to be precise). I think it's timed to coincide with San Diego Comic Con. Good Times.

Now that school is over I really need to lose my books. I forgot that I could sell them back to the bookstore. Would you believe that the Columbia bookstore is a Barnes and Noble? I was surprised. Although in retrospect there is two Starbucks on every block here on the west side (NYC) so it really shouldn't have surprised me.

I checked out one of the many graduation celebrations on campus. Columbia College campus is now known only as "tent-city".

Gotta run, one more final to go and a ton of episodes to edit. Next on the list is our interview with the creator of the GI Joe Real American Hero comic book.

Throughout Guess What's Coming To Dinner, Gaeta sings to distract himself from the pain after his leg is amputated. The song, Gaeta's Lament, serves as a narrative thread connecting the entire episode, not only communicating his character's misery, but weaving together the multiple story arcs.

Alone she sleeps in the shirt of man
With my three wishes clutched in her hand
The first that she be spared the pain
That comes from a dark and laughing rain
