I am a major fan of Cuban cigars but I intend to try a few cigars with different origins in the future. The Quorum Churchill was a cigar that I smoked before. It works well with my style of draw and remains mild even if not rested. Because of its excellent mild taste I find myself doing that once in a while. That is really the main defining feature of this cigar: highly consistent and mild the whole way through.

The wrapper is slightly fragile, flaky almost. It is worth ensuring a proper cut with a cigar cutter otherwise regret will surely follow. This is a bit of an issue with cigar lounges that have waitresses cut cigars. Especially with torpedo style cigars it is nice to have that kind of control to get the perfect cut. It is part of the little things that make a good cigar so enjoyable. While on the subject, it might be nice to advocate for little stands for cigars rather than ashtrays with shapes for cigars. Some of these ashtrays can harm the even burn of a cigar, which is most dissappointing.

E pensare che il professore di Linus aveva detto che il suo progetto non avrebbe fatto strada...proprio un luminare!!!

Adesso il sistema, come un ragazzo, si sta facendo importante, tanto che ci sono molte persone e aziende che stanno adottando la via dell'open source. L'anno è il 17, fra un anno saranno 18, e chissà non arrivi quella maturità che possa permettere un ulteriore salto di qualità mettendo in difficoltà gli utenti sulla scelta sel sistema operativo.

In questi giorni tralaltro (strana coincidenza) è uscita la nuova versione beta della distro Linux più famosa (almeno in Italia), Ubuntu. E' infatti disponibile la 8.10 beta che può essere o scaricata tramite cd o si può scaricare aggiornando il proprio sistema operativo dalla versione 8.04. A chi non l'avesse ancora fatto, un occasione in più per provare Linux, a chi ce l'ha già: complimenti e fate gli auguri a quel genio di Torvalds e al pinguino Tux.

1. Now with a Ralink card (RT61) also this connection is resetted all the time. On reconnection every time the card that never worked with WPA (Intel 2200 BG) is used. The bug has expired (I set it to 'new' again) and it was always just commented to update the driver. So nobody at Canonical seems to care if Intel 2200 BG works or not?
2. Related is the fact that I mentioned above that Network Manager never remebers which card and connection works. So if there is a internal card which cant connect he will ALWAYS use this, even if that has never worked. I reported this months ago and nobody cared., too. What the people working on wireless network do not seem to realize is that not every hardware works with every access point. So remembering what works and what not is so essential! Actually I alwys thoght that was what NM was all about. But it seems they only remember the password/key which has worked  and not how it worked. I guess this is trivial feature to add so again I dont understand why this has not been changed. Or why a card that never worked is even displayed and takes 80% of all entries, while the working card always switches its position (upper or lower end of the other card) - I would guess it would be important to display the most used and working connections at the top - also depending on the location. Come on guys, NM is not that new any more. So please fix those minor issues - I dont see any sense in listing 30 wireless networks in my range that I never use and will never use. What exactly am i supposed to do with them? This is only a distraction.

So my situation now is that not only the internal card is still not working but now the external PCMCIA card is resetted every five minutes or so. Which makes Ubuntu quite unusable for me - and its already Beta time. I had thought ipw2200 drivers would become really much better with newer kernel > 2.6.26, but 2.6.27 I still have the same bugs. So everybody having same type of hardware should stay back from Ubuntu till I can report that things are working.

Here is an example log. As you see wlan0 (rt61) comes up and then eth2 (ipw2200) interferes:

Set the hardware to ignore all write/erase cycles to the GbE region in the ICHx NVM. This feature can be disabled by the WriteProtectNVM module parameter (enabled by default) only after a hardware reset, but the machine must be power cycled before trying to enable writes.

Although the e1000e was unblacklisted I had to modprobe it again to work on my Ubuntu Intrepid. On a terminal:

sudo modprobe e1000e

Let's introduce many more users to the wonderful world of Xubuntu :)

At the moment I'm rarely using that laptop so I can't give it a good thorough review (although I have a few things to say about Ubuntu/Linux in a while), but here are my vague impressions.

Theme

The new dark human theme is pretty attractive:

In my book, any change that helps define Ubuntu as apart from other distros and OSs is a good move. (Why people use themes that look identical to Vista or OS X is beyond me.) I don't like the defauly background as much as I did the Heron one, but it fits nicely anyway.

There is one flaw I can see so far, however: big white spaces just don't seem to work with dark themes.

It's not exactly a perfect theme quite yet, but I'm sure (read: hope) these things are tweaked before final release.

Breakages

I've had one minor breakage in the short time I've been using Intrepid - no keystrokes seemed to register, and I could only click on certain things. Applications/Places/System drop-down menus would hilight, but not drop down. Luckily, this seemed to resolve itselve with a log-out and log-back-in-again. Apart from that, all seems to be working perfectly under the hood.

Hibernate

One of the issues I've had before with this laptop is that hibernate/suspend didn't work perfectly, and took quite a while to resume. Under Intrepid? Perfect. Good job developers!

Overall

As I said, these are only very initial impressions - basically limited to what it looks like and using it to write and print one sheet of A4 and be on IRC. That said, I like it. I like where it's headed - away from a slightly immature look (all that Windows 3.1 grey muddled in with a not-very-attractive brown) and towards its own signature style (I am particularly impressed with window title bars - swish!).

So, congratulations to everyone who's been working on or contributing to it, and I look forward to the end of the month and the release itself!

The beta of the latest Ubuntu distribution is hot off the presses! There are a number of improvements over the older version (8.04), which I pointed out in my previous post about the alpha. To summarize:

• create a private, encrypted directory within each user’s home directory
• screen notifications for changing resolutions for multiple monitors
• limited-permission guest account
• a new theme
• the log out panel applet has been completely replaced
• new wallpaper
• new pam-auth-update tool
• BBC plug-in for Totem
• Samba 3.2
• a "Last Successful Boot" recovery option

You can download the beta from Ubuntu's web site or if you aren't ready to take the plunge, the release candidate will be released October 23 with the final release being unveiled just after that on October 30.

Nowe Ubuntu nie zaskoczy nas niestety ciekawym i innowacyjnym wyglądem jak można było przypuszczać po przeczytaniu wcześniejszych doniesień o pracach nad wyglądem. Będzie znowu szaro, ponuro i brzydko. Złe pierwsze wrażenie wśród świeżaków gwarantowane. Zresztą ocenić można samemu tutaj. Informacje o wynajęciu grafików i dizajnerów chyba naprawdę okazały się plotkami.. a szkoda.

Jedyne funkcje które na prawdę mogą być przydatne to Odzyskiwanie systemu oraz DKMS reszta to raczej marketingowe zapchajdziury które wypisywane są z braku konkretnych innowacji. Według mnie nowe Ubuntu nie zachwyci jak poprzednie wydania a kilka dni po premierze zrobi się cicho o nim. Jednak czekam na Ubuntu8.10, po testach z wersjami alpha mój obecny system ledwo zipie ;]

This cigarillo is inbetween a Montecristo Club and Montecristo Purito. Upon feeling it for the first time the wrapper seemed slightly less firm than most cigars. The feel and balance of a cigar has been ignored in a lot of reviews I have read. The feel is critical, is it comfortable holding it in your hand? Is the texture right so you don't have to worry about it slipping if it is "hanging" down from your hands in a more laidback fashion? If the texture is highly smooth or the cigar very long and heavy you may end up applying more pressure to the cigar, which can damage the shape. Naturally this can be combatted by properly holding the cigar, but sometimes it is nice to switch positions. One, just because it is nice to have variation and two, because you don't always want to have a big cigar between you and the person you are talking too. The slightly weaker wrapper proved to be no issue in this case however.

This cigarillo behaved favorably and can be highly recommended. The tobacco has more sophistication, more layers to it than many cigars including the competition it has in Romeo Y Jullietta or Montecristo. The taste had a pleasant linger but was not around too long.

On an embarrassing side note, even on a cigarillo this small I found myself interrupted. To continue the embarassment I relit after 5 minutes and found the remaining tobacco to still be good.

Synopsis / Kritik (PRESTO): WALL·Es Vorfilm PRESTO erinnert trotz modernster Animationstechnik eher an die aus heutiger Sicht geradezu anarchi(sti)sch-brutalen TOM & JERRY-Filmchen, an denen man sich vor gar nicht allzu langer Zeit noch ergötzen konnte, bevor das Nachmittagsfernsehen die Kindheit zugunsten der Unterirdischenschicht zu vernachlässigen begann:

Der eitle und selbstverliebte Varieté-Magier PRESTO ist der Meister des Kaninchen-aus-dem-Zylinder-Tricks. Geblendet von seinem Ruhm, beginnt er allerdings seinen tierischen compagnon zu vernachlässigen: Die delikate Möhre, nach der sich sein hungriger kleiner Partner verzehrt, verweigert der Zauberer dem weißen Hoppler – erst muss ein weiterer umjubelter Auftritt routiniert abgespult werden. Vor Hunger und Wut bebend vermasselt Kumpel-Kaninchen PRESTO die show, mit ebenso haarsträubenden wie schmerzhaften Konsequenzen für den Star-Magier, dessen ahnungslose Zuschauerschar die Kette von Unfällen, die er dank der erfolgreichen Sabotage seines Kaninchens zu überleben hat, mit Beifall überschüttet.

PRESTO dauert nur 5 Minuten und brennt währenddessen ein geradezu apokalyptisches Feuerwerk an slapstick ab. Und nicht nur der nostalgische Abspann erinnert dabei an die gute alte Zeit des Zeichentrick, als dieser noch nicht „kindgerecht“ zu sein hatte und statt faschistoider political correctness lieber gnadenloser Anarchie frönte: PRESTO ist nichts weiter als ein fünfminütiger, Zelluloid-gewordener Lachkrampf auf allerhöchstem Zwechfell-Niveau.

Synopsis (WALL·E): Wir schreiben das Jahr 2700. Vor fast 600 Jahren hat die Menschheit den unbewohnbaren Planeten Erde verlassen und auf dem gigantischen Raumkreuzer „Axiom“ Zuflucht gefunden, eigentlich ein Kreuzfahrtschiff für den interstellaren Ferienausflug.

Während die Menschen ihren bereits Jahrhunderte andauernden „Urlaub“ von ihrem Heimatplaneten „genießen“, haben Roboter der Baureihe WALL·E (steht für Waste Allocation Load Lifter-Earth-class) versucht, den völligen zugemüllten Himmelskörper für eine eventuelle Rückkehr der Menschheit aufzuräumen. Doch das Projekt ist gescheitert, weil alle Roboter den Geist aufgegeben haben.

Alle? Nein, einer verrichtet noch seinen Dienst, begleitet von seinem besten Freund, einer fidelen Küchenschabe. Der letzte der mobilen Schrottpressen hat binnen der Jahrhunderte eine Persönlichkeit entwickelt: Zwar geht er tattäglich pflichtbewusst seiner Arbeit nach, doch irgendwann ist ihm die Errichtung von gigantischen Wolkenkratzer-Türmen aus menschlichem Zivilisationsmüll nicht mehr genug, und er beginnt sich sein eigenes „Museum der Unschuld“ einzurichten, aus Dingen, denen er persönlichen Wert zumisst. (Orhan Pamuk, der türkische Literaturnobelpreisträger, welcher gerade in Istanbul sein so tituliertes Museum zu seinem gleichnamigen Roman aufbaut, in welchem er Dinge sammelt, die seine Hauptfigur an die Liebe seines Lebens erinnern, wäre stolz auf die kleine Schrottpresse.)

WALL·Es größter Schatz in seinem „Museum“ ist eine Videokassette mit dem Hollywood musical HELLO, DOLLY!, die er sich einsam und verlassen jeden Abend ansieht, sich sehnsüchtig nach Gesellschaft sehnend. Und diese kündigt sich eines Tages dann auch tatsächlich an: Unter gewaltigem Donnergrollen setzt ein Raumtransporter auf der Erde auf und entlässt die Sonde EVE (erinnert stark an den I-Pod und steht für Extraterrestial Vegetation Evaluator), die den Auftrag hat, neue Vegetation aufzuspüren, damit die Menschheit wieder zur Erde zurück kehren kann.

WALL·E verliebt sich augenblicklich in die kalte Schönheit, die seinem hingebungsvollen Drängen bald nachgibt. Doch kaum hat EVE mit WALL·Es Hilfe tatsächlich eine Pflanze aufgespürt, da gibt sie auch schon ihrem Auftrag gemäß den Geist auf und wird von dem Raumtransporter zurück zur „Axiom“ gebracht, zusammen mit dem liebestollen WALL·E, der als blinder Passagier mitreist.

Die Ankunft der zwei verliebten Roboter auf der „Axiom“ setzt eine anarchi(sti)sch-chaotische Kettenrevolution in Gang, in deren Verlauf die von Konsumterror und tödlicher Langeweile versklavte Menschheit, allen voran der von seinem Autopiloten „Otto“ gegängelte Schiffskapitän, sich an ihren Heimatplaneten zu erinnern beginnt und an all das, was das Leben auf ihm so lebenswert hat sein lassen ...

Kritik (WALL·E): NUMMER 5 LEBT wieder und in WALL·E weiter. Zumindest erinnert dieser physiognomisch an den kultigen metallenen Antiheld aus den 80er Jahren. Und auch sonst versucht der Film, so vehement, überzeugend und erfolgreich zugleich, an unter Zivilisationsmüll verschütt gegangene menschliche Ideale zu appellieren, allen voran natürlich: die Liebe.

Dabei entwirft WALL·E quasi nebenbei und mit leichter Hand ein überzeugendes Zukunftsszenario, genau so könnte die Menschheit tatsächlich degenerieren: Auf der „Axiom“ vegetieren aufgequollene Schlappschwänze und Fettsäcke, nicht mehr zum Gehen befähigt, sondern sich faul auf schwebenden Liegen fläzend, wurstige Finger umklammern den Becher mit Flüssignahrung, der starrtrübe Blick nimmt nur noch den zweidimensionalen Bildschirm vor dem teigigen Gesicht wahr, über den jegliche Kommunikation, oder das, was davon übrig ist, abläuft. Der Konsumterror des regierungsähnlichen Großkonzerns BNL (steht für Buynlarge) ist allgegenwärtig, der neueste Modetrend („Blau ist das neue Rot!“) wird per Lautsprecher postuliert und die Menschheit reagiert prompt und gefügig per Knopfdruck und „kleidet“ sich entsprechend der Firmendirektive neu ein: Das alles geschieht hinreißend animiert und ist ebenso böse wie genau gezeichnet.

Doch die vernichtende Kritik an der menschlichen Rasse und „Zivilisation“, die WALL·E so überzeugend zu vermitteln versteht, hält leider nicht allzu lange vor, genauso wenig im übrigen, wie der Stummfilmcharakter der ersten Hälfte des Films, der seinen berückenden Charme vor allem aus den so wortlosen wie rührenden Annäherungsversuchen WALL·Es und EVEs zieht; hier gelingt dem Film das grandiose Kunststück, dem frühen Kintopp-slapstick à la Charlie Chaplin und Buster Keaton zu huldigen, vor der Kulisse einer apokalyptischen Zukunftsvision, die an BLADE RUNNER oder PLANET DER AFFEN erinnert.

Im zweiten Teil des Films, welcher auf der „Axiom“ spielt, verliert aber leider WALL·E nicht nur seinen Stummfilmcharakter: Die Frage, ob die sich so genüsslich ihrem armseligen Dasein als Konsumsklaven hingebende Menschheit ihre Errettung durch die beiden verliebten Roboter überhaupt verdient hat, stellen sich die Macher des Films nicht, immerhin ist Pixar inzwischen Teil von Walt Disney, und allzubald muss ein Wohlfühlszenario her: Die Menschheit beginnt sich daran zu erinnern, was es wirklich heißt, Mensch zu sein und beginnt gegen die eigene Technikgläubigkeit, die antiseptische Umgebung und den von Maschinen gesteuerten Big Brother-Konzern BNL zu rebellieren.

Das wird weiterhin auf allerhöchstem Niveau und sogar mit einigen live action-Elementen (zum ersten Mal in einem Pixar-Film) animiert, gleichzeitig wird aber so lieblos direkt auf ein happy end zugesteuert, dass man bald geneigt ist, das gesamte Drehbuch dahingehend in Frage zu stellen: Ging es etwa dann doch nur um dieses etwas plakative Weltrettungsszenario? Wenn ja, dann schade drum.

Wie dem auch sei: WALL·E stellt einen Klassiker des Animationsfilms dar. Er beweist lange Zeit Mut, in Stummfilm-Form daher zu kommen, ist von Anfang bis Ende hinreißend animiert, ist so rührend wie zwerchfellerschütternd komisch zugleich und beweist sogar noch in den zwei Abspännen sein überbordendes kreatives Potential, wenn er zunächst der menschlichen kulturellen Evolution von der Höhlenmalerei bis zu Künstlern wie Vincent van Gogh und Auguste Renoir huldigt, um dann auch noch, während die credits rollen, alten Computerspielen der 8-Bit-Generation wie BOULDER DASH oder IMPOSSIBLE MISSION seine Ehrerbietung zu erweisen. (Und irgendwann spielen WALL·E und EVE auch noch auf einem alten ATARI 2600 den alten Computerspiel-Klassiker PONG.)

Somit funktioniert das digitale Rührstück WALL·E auch noch als überzeugender Vertreter der „Sehnsucht nach einer analogen Welt“ (Susan Vahabzadeh, Süddeutsche Zeitung) und schafft es zudem, diese Sehnsucht besser zu bebildern und auszufüllen als Michel Gondrys ABGEDREHT, der dem abgenutzten Medium Videokassette, das der kleinen Schrottpresse (in) WALL·E mit Hilfe von HELLO, DOLLY! die Liebe näher bringt, ebenfalls ein Denkmal gesetzt hat.

Nos ezt hallgatva a várakozási szintem, ha lehet, még magasabbra kúszott (pedig már év eleje óta a topon volt), majd a vetítés indítása után sajnos jócskán vissza is zuhant köszönhetően a nagyon gázos első húsz percnek. Szó szerint be voltam parázva, hogy akkor most mi a jóisten lesz ebből: kapunk egy tévéfilm színvonalú high school tinidrámát jó ízes szájbarágással, vagy mi? (ugyanis az első néhány jelenet alapján nagyon így nézett ki). Aztán szerencsére változott a helyzet, és felpörögtek az események.

A Ron Jones féle eredeti kísérlethez képest jópár dolgot megváltoztattak, például áthelyezték az egészet az 1960-as évek Amerikájából napjaink Németországába, miközben számos elemet kihagytak vagy lecseréltek, sőt a végét a drámai hatás fokozása érdekében egy az egyben megváltoztatták, na de erről majd később.

Azzal kezdődik az egész, hogy egy kisváros német középiskolájában tematikus projekthét indul (ezek szerint náluk ilyen is van, jó nekik... :) ), ahol minden tanulónak ki kell választania egy adott témát, és az elkövetkező néhány napban csak azzal kell foglalkoznia a suliban. Rainer Wenger tanár úr (a hátborzongató alakítást nyújtó Jürgen Vogel) autokrácia gyorstalpalója szépen el is kezdődik. Már az első órán a fogalom meghatározásakor felmerül a kérdés, hogy vajon napjaink Németországában kialakulhat-e olyan fasiszta jellegű mozgalom, mely teljes mértékben feltétel néküli tekintélyelvű hatalmon alapszik, és mely a tagokon kívül mindenkit kizár saját miniközösségéből. A diákok szerint nem, erre Wenger elhatározza, hogy bebizonyítja nekik az ellenkezőjét.

És itt jön az első megbicsaklás: az a pár jelenetsor, amiben Wenger a diákokat bevonja a kísérletbe, nekem túlságosan is erőltetettnek tűnt. Egyszerűen nem bírom elképzelni, hogy a valóságban 16-17 éves - félig-meddig kialakult egészséges személyiséggel és önértékeléssel rendelkező - diákokat így, ilyesmire, ilyen gyorsan és ennyire könnyen rá lehetne venni. Ez nonszensz, ilyen nincs, maximum jóval fiatalabb, hiszékeny 8-10 éves gyerkőcöket lehetne ilyen módszerrel manipulálni, de semmiképpen sem félig felnőtt, józan belátású fiatalokat (bár lehet, hogy én vagyok naív, fene tudja). Annyira hihetetlen és valószerűtlen az egész, pedig ha Hitler képes volt ugyanígy meghülyíteni egy teljes nemzetet, Ron Jones meg '67-ben egy csapat másodéves középiskolást, akkor csak lehet benne valami. De azért mégis...

Szóval a fentiek miatt a film eleje illetve a kísérletbe történő bevonás nekem nem tetszett (arról nem is beszélve, hogy valakinek a személyiségét nem lehet egyik napról a másikra, ilyen rövid idő alatt kifordítani). Szerencsére miután sikerült ezen valamennyire túltennem magamat, a történet váratlanul bedurvult, a kísérlet meglehetősen furcsa fordulatot vett, és az egész sztori attól a bizonyos vízilabda meccstől számítva olyan befejezésben csúcsosodott ki, hogy konkrétan azt hittem lehidalok. És ez az az eredeti kísérlethez képest megváltoztatott darabka, amely megmenti a filmet a középszerűségtől, és amelyet itt most nem fogok lelőni - legyen elég annyi, hogy az utolsó félóra kegyetlenül jól meg van csinálva, és a végeredmény rendesen fejbe vág.

A fiatal színészek teljesítménye végig korrekt, annak ellenére, hogy gyakorlatilag egyikük sem egy nagy név, kivéve talán azt a Max Riemelt-et, aki Gansel előző filmjében a főszereplő srácot játsszotta.

A Wengert alakító Jürgen Vogel-t viszont feltétlenül ki kell emelnem: eszméletlenül nagyot alakít a csávó! Az ő teljesítménye - az utolsó félóra mellett - az a másik tényező, mely a Die Welle-t jóval az átlag fölé emeli. Ahogyan Vogel belebújik az elszánt, határozott, ellentmondást nem tűrő, agresszív és manipulatív führer szerepébe, az valami félelmetes! Arról nem is beszélve, hogy rendkívül hitelesen ábrázolja a tanár folyamatos jellemfejlődésének egyes szakaszait: Wenger kezdetben csak segíteni szeretne diákjainak egy történelmi fogalom megértésében, ezért megy bele a játékba, majd amikor látja, hogy azok bekapják a horgot és elfogadják feltétel nélküli vezetőjüknek, megrészegíti a maximális és korlátlan hatalom érzése, egészen addig a pontig, amíg rá nem döbben, hogy baj van: az irányítás kezd kicsúszni a kezei közül ("Úristen, mit csináltam!").

Dennis Gansel rendezése technikai szempontból elejétől-végéig vérprofi (nagyon tetszettek a videoklipes megoldásai illetve a pörgős vágás). Nem kell sok idő hozzá, hogy ez a fiatal pasas Tom Tykwer-hez hasonlóan nemzetközi szinten is ismert legyen. Ezen darabja ugyan nem ugorja meg a Napola által meglehetősen magasra helyezett lécet, viszont a Die Welle ennek ellenére megtekintésre érdemes, fontos film, mely nagyon is komoly mondanivalóval rendelkezik. Ha van olyan produkció, amelyre középiskolás diákokat el kell vinni a modern történelemoktatás keretei között, akkor ez az!

A Hullám meglehetősen gyenge felütéssel indít, viszont amikor éppen elkönyvelnéd magadban egy átlagos darabként, rákapcsol, és egy jól időzített, váratlan pillanatban szó szerint lerobbantja a fejedet. Réz Andrásnak igaza van: ezt a filmet nem lesz könnyű leráznod magadról, ha egyszer megnézed! 8/10 (de csak és kizárólag az utolsó félóra miatt)

Pas trés beau mais heureusement il est toujours en alpha donc ça pourrait changer. Mais en surfant sur le Web je trouve le wiki ubuntu officiel où on peut voir les propositions de thèmes faites par des utilisateurs et certaines sont très beau et d'autres intéressants ou pas. C'est ici sur Le Wiki d'Ubuntu (en anglais), mais il y a une que j'ai vraiment aimé, c'est DustTheme. Très sobre, il ressemble comme Mac OS mais reste unique et garde un ton sombre.
