When AVG goes bad

Intermittant but far too frequent STOP blue screen messages seen on Windows XP with AVG 8.0 Internet Security (the one with the firewall component). Strange thing is, the blue screen often mentions things like IRQL errors, so it may lead you down a faulty hardware path.

Turns out the AVG 8.0 firewall can be the culprit. An easy way to determine this (apart from disabling the software) is to remove the network connection. No network=no firewall activity=no blue screen.

Official word from AVG support is to do this (which has worked on all instances we've seen so far):

"Please find the attached file 'delete_ndis.re_' and save it to your hard drive.
Then please rename it to 'delete_ndis.reg' and run the file. When prompted, please
confirm adding of the information to registry.

Please do not restart your computer at this point, and perform the repair AVG
installation by running the AVG installation on your desktop.

Then restart the computer."

Contents of 'delete_ndis.reg' (copy this into notepad and save it with that filename):

I haven't actually found this issue on the AVG support site, so hopefully this helps someone. Contact AVG support is this doesnt work and they will send you a diagnostic program to generate log files and return to them for further eval.

In twenty-first-century Los Angeles, Julia Huntington studies the human genome, seeking the origins of human emotion. As passionate about her marriage to her beloved Klaus as she is about her life's work, Julia is delighted to discover that she is pregnant.

Separated by nearly 150 years, Lavinia and Julia suffer the same shock when their men abandon them. Their powerful love becomes painful hate; their intense passion transforms into icy logic. The genes of the Huntington women have formed their emotions--now their life experiences drive them to make decisions that they, and those they love, may long regret.

Commentary: I started reading another of Learner's novels quite awhile ago, The Witch of Cologne, but I never finished it. However, I really enjoyed Soul--finished it in a day. Learner did a great job of interweaving two stories and two conflicts, transitioning well between one narrative and the next.

I think the best part about this book was the emotion and intensity involved--Learner takes the reader through a whole rollercoaster of ups and downs, and you can feel every single thing that happens to both Lavinia and Julia. I don't want to reveal too much, but I'm not sure I would have been as strong as Julia, strong enough to hold back from dealing revenge at such a horrible betrayal.

Usually a novel with two narratives can become unbalanced--I've read books before where I become far more interested in one story than the other. But Learner did a good job of paralleling Julia's and Lavinia's stories.

The one thing I can really pick on is Learner's central, scientific idea that supposedly tied the two stories together--the question of nature vs. nurture, of whether or not our DNA and basic genetic makeup can determine our behavior. It may be because I am personally so biased (I favor nurture over nature) but I felt that the scientific arguments and evidence presented in Soul were weak and not particularly engaging. The science and genetics weren't what linked these two related women--their situations and decisions did.

Maybe in the end, especially considering the climax, that is what Learner intended to prove.

Great read, fast-paced and very, very interesting.

Luis Quintana es un cantautor diferente. A mí me tiene enamorado.Y es que siempre que le he podido ver he sentido algo diferente de lo que uno siente en concierto desde este tipo... Alegría, felicidad, plenitud, un nudo en el estómago (pero que se deshace suavemente, no aprieta). Será que el tipo es muy gracioso... o que las canciones suelen acabar bien... No sé.

Essaouira is a city and tourist resort in western Morocco, on the Atlantic coast.
The Medina of Essaouira (formerly "Mogador") is a UNESCO World Heritage Listed city, as an example of a late 18th century fortified town, as transferred to North Africa.
The fishing harbour, suffering from the competition of Agadir and Safi remains rather small, although the catches (sardines, conger eels) are surprisingly abundant due to the coastal upwelling generated by the powerful trade winds and the Canaries Current.

Tourism is of growing importance, supporting boutique hotels established in traditional Moroccan riads, within the old town's ramparts. There are a number of modern purpose-built hotels, running along the beach. The medina is home to many small arts and crafts businesses, notably cabinet making and 'thuya' wood-carving (using roots of the Tetraclinis tree), both of which have been practised in Essaouira for centuries.

Essaouira is also renowned for its kitesurfing and windsurfing, with the powerful trade wind blowing almost constantly onto the protected, almost waveless, bay. Several world-class clubs rent top-notch material on a weekly basis.
Parasols tend to be used on the beach as a protection against the wind and the blowing sand. Camel excursions are available on the beach and into the desert band in the interior.
