That's right. This year After Dark Films has decided to release the "8 Films to Die For" in January 2009. The films are now set to hit the screen from January 9-15, as opposed to the early-November release of the first two years. Supposedly, After Dark Films is still in the process of choosing the last three films to join the festival. The Broken, Slaughter, Perkins 14, From Within, and Butterfly Effect: Revelation are all scheduled to be there, although I've heard rumor that the only completed film is The Broken. It's no wonder why the festival was postponed.

This means, if horror fans want a scare around this Halloween they are going to have to settle on the next Saw sequel. And believe me, after Saw IV, no one wants to settle for that. Hopefully the extra time on After Dark's hands will only mean they pick better films than Crazy Eights and Unearthed, the two worst films of both years (both of which came in the second year of Horrorfest).

Aside from the festival being postponed, having only one completed film, and potentially having to watch another installment of the Butterfly Effect series, the worst news is yet to come for me. I scoped out the theatre listings and there are no cinemas in or around the 401 that would be convenient enough for me to see all eight films. 2007's Miss Horrorfest, Mistress Malice, and I are on the same page with our reactions to all this...

I'm glad you feel the same way I do, Malice. Call me.

The Film - Everybody Wants To Be An Italian was inspired by Jason’s experiences while living and practicing medicine in Boston, where he met and eventually won the love of his Italian wife. Jason’s freshman effort was Unrest, a medical thriller set in the all too world of gross anatomy class, where Alison Blanchard must confront the spirit of her cadaver as well as her own inner demons if she is to save her classmates. Stemming from his own experience as a medical student, Jason has long been struck by what a viscerally unique and terrifying environment gross anatomy is. After Dark Films and Lionsgate released it theatrically in 2006 as part of the 8 Films To Die For. Jason got his start in filmmaking years after he dropped out of high school to study biochemistry and ultimately earn a medical degree. He was knee deep in a general surgery residency when he realized his true passion was education…and the largest classroom in the world is the cinema. Jason left medicine to attend USC’s Peter Stark Program. While there, he directed the thesis level films Peeping Tom and The First Vampire. Jason spends whatever time he is not writing and directing with his family or shooting still photography.

The Verdict - EBWTBI might look a lot like most of your generic Rom Com movies that have been floating around for the past couple of years; Bridget Jones, Love Actually etc - and to be fair it pretty much is nor is it much different. But don't let that deter you just yet! The film follows Jake, a helpless romanticist who's charachters life is based loosely around that of director Jason Todd's, as he finds himself torn between his ex girlfriend of 8 years, Isabella and new love interest Merissa, who he just can't seem to get it right with. But just when Jake and Merissa finally seem to be hitting it off, Isabella makes an predictable return back into Jakes life once more, forcing him to reconsider all that he knows and who he is really in love with whilst preventing a cat fight and trying to please his family by keeping up their Italian traditions. All typically cliche, but I happen to actually think it looks quite good. It definitely looks a lot better than My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Who knows, maybe its because i want to be Italian?! Worth a view.

Elenco: James C. Burns, Tara Gerard, Kelsey Crane, Kelsey Wedeen

   1st place: Borderlands Rating: 7/10

When you look at this movie as a true crime story about a serial-killing cult that lured Spring Breakers into their doom, then this takes the cake for producing the most heebie-jeebies. But I might be biased since I'm a Texan who's heard of this case and been to these areas.

2nd place: Mulberry St. Rating: 6/10

There needs to be more horror movies set in NYC! This captures the grit and character of New York while making a good zombie movie along the way. But the problem is that rat-people make me laugh. I just expect them to start singing and dancing (Rats). This could have been a smash had the zombies been a little more normal.

Only watch if your a devoted horror completist:

The Deaths of Ian Stone (creature effects were better in the 60's)

Tooth and Nail (kinda ridiculous, but what gives?)

One of the latest batch of "8 Films To Die For" After Dark Horror Fest movies, Nightmare Man is a mostly entertaining B-movie that frequently succeeds in spite of itself. The plot involves a mask that may or may not have resulted in a woman being possessed by a murderous demon. The movie's marred by the usual things that plague a low budget production: Spotty writing and acting, makeup that's often more silly than scary. Its primary problem, however, is it can't quite decide what sort of movie it wants to be, instead opting to change gears about every half an hour. Then there are a couple of plot twists, one you'll probably see coming, and the other you'll probably wish had never arrived. Nevertheless, the movie works up some tension and a few scares, and the actors, particularly Tiffany Shepis, who seems to be a sort of 21st century Linnea Quigley, do a lot to sell the movie. The last twenty or so minutes of the movie borrow copiously from at least two other horror thrillers that I can think of, with not so great results. Until then, it's not a bad ride for undemanding horror fans, so I give it three monkeys, though you'll want to adjust that rating down if you are a demanding horror fan.

MONKEY RATING: THREE (DEMONIC, OR POSSIBLY JUST DEPRESSED AND DELUSIONAL) MONKEYS
