For those of us now in our mid to late 20s, the videos made by the self-dubbed “Angry Video Ga

For those of us now in our mid to late 20s, the videos made by the self-dubbed "Angry Video Game Nerd" are they very definition of nostalgic. With each new episode he reviews games made for consoles such as Atari, Nintendo, Sega CD, Calico Vision, and the like. As the name implies, almost every epsiode finds him in the throws of a mad nerd rage at how poorly constructed a lot of the older games were.

The theme song, although quite catchy, is definitely not one of the strong points of the show as a result of the vocalist. Another strange aspect of the show is that although most people who played the games featured when they were first released are older now, the show's humor seems to be aimed at a far younger crowd. Despite this, the episodes are rich in content, well edited, and always entertaining.

There are usually several weeks between new episodes, but there is a large archive of past episodes for new comers to watch. The Angry Video Game Nerd can be found at CineMassacre.com and on YouTube.

If you make electronic music, chances are you’ve heard of Virtual Studio Technology, or VSTs.

If you make electronic music, chances are you've heard of Virtual Studio Technology, or VSTs. Before I found Tweak Bench however, I had never heard of them. The quick explanation of them is that they're like entire synthesizers in one little file on your computer that you then control from an external MIDI controller.

Tweak Bench offers a wide variety of awesomely lo-fi homebrew VSTs, both synths and effects, all for free download. Across the board, the VSTs have a very tasteful 8-Bit Nintendo feel to them, while still retaining a useful quality that makes you actually want to use them in a song.

Check them out at www.TweakBench.com.

Hey everyone its time for another Play it Through post from me Cornshaq and its my runs of Track and Field and Track and Field 2. Both of these games are classic olympic style games with Track and Field 2 being my overall favorite of the Olympic games on the NES. In these runs I just go ahead and complete each event one time just to show them off. I also do use the turbo button often in the run because the button mashing gets to a ridiculous level in these two titles. Enjoy!!!!

it's hard to pinpoint exactly at what stage digital technology changed the course of our lives
and social interactions. with the emergence of computers in the 1970s, we saw the introduction
of digital icons. developed at the xerox research center facility in palo alto, these icons were
meant to make the process of navigating through computer interfaces easier. a small pixelated
image which typically ranges in size from 16x16 pixels to 128x128 pixels, icons were designed
to be easily recognizable. used on our desktops, toolbars, web-pages and other applications,
computer icons draw from real world objects and have been known to take on the form of a
file folder, paint brush, speaker etc., symbols we can easily identify and associate with.
individuals even use avatars (a form of icon) to represent themselves on instant messaging
programs, virtual computer games and various internet forums. computer icons have become
an important part of our visual language, so much so that these digital computer icons are
making their return into the real world. there are also a number of products out on the market
which have been influenced by computer hardware. from the desk to the desktop and back again.

The 8-bit genre seems to be in bloom after Crystal Castles breathed life into the gameboys and atari-keyboards all around the world. Now, several other bands seem to achieve succes with their 8-bit sounds, and while I'm not very impressed with most of them, You Love Her Coz She's Dead managed to win me over. The style is a little more horror'ish than Crystal Castles and everything is a bit more crazy and messy, but that doesn't make the music less amazing. There's no looking back just a pursuit of musical kicks and You Love Her Coz She's Dead will definately be one of the shinings stars on the 8-bit sky not far from now. Their track Superheroes will be part of the Kitsuné Maison 6 compilation and they're releasing an EP in late November including some of their gems. Thanks to Hyperbole for spreading the word about this 8-bit madness.

How many of you have heard of chiptune or 8 bit music? Raise your hands. For those of you who didn't raise your hands, you probably won't care too much about this documentary unless you're feeling especially adventurous or interested discovering new music. Blip Festival: Reformat The Planet is a film that explores the origins and future of 8 bit music via the 2006 Blip Festival (a music fest in NY comprised entirely of 8 bit musicians from around the world). For those curious as to what type of music this is, I shall quote the chiptune Wikipedia article: it's "music written in sound formats where all the sounds are synthesized in realtime by a computer or video game console sound chip." In simpler terms, it's using an NES or GameBoy or similar video game system as an musical instrument. The result is music that sounds like it could be from an old video game but is usually more engaging and dance oriented. (Check out the 8 Bit Peoples website for lots of free 8 bit music.)

For those who are already fans of 8 bit music, Reformat The Planet will probably be a very exciting documentary, if only for the extensive footage from the 2006 Blip Festival held in New York. There are plenty of live performances ranging from chiptune veterans like Nullsleep and Bit Shifter plus newcomers like The Depreciation Guild and Anamanaguchi. Portions of the movie feature almost entire songs from these artists, merging documentary with music video. And the interviews with the musicians are fascinating, allowing us to discover how these people approach making chiptunes and where they think the future of the scene is headed.

Reformat The Planet does an excellent job of filming a 4 day music festival and using the footage to create an interesting and informative documentary about a mostly underground music scene. Instead of making a documentary about a specific festival or a new music genre, director Paul Owens does both and with great success. I can only assume Blip Festival: Reformat The Planet won't resonate with the majority of people due to it being so niche, but those initially interested in the idea of making music with video game consoles will most likely be very pleased with the results.

Right now, Reformat The Planet is neither in theaters nor on DVD. It is currently streaming on Pitchfork.TV until the 21st, so check it out there if you're interested. Otherwise, you'll probably have to wait for a DVD release.

I was lucky enough to attend the opening and check out some of the crazy artwork on display this year. While there weren’t any giant-size working controllers or custom chiptune Guitar Hero games or anything at the show this year, the Nerdcore girls were acting as a human exhibit of sorts, lying around glass enclosures in their underwear, playing old school games in front of drooling fanboys disguised as hipsters. Adding to the excitement were DJs playing midi tunes while bartenders served (free!) Colt 45s in custom designed 24 oz. cans.

Now I’m not much of an art critic but I find the whole 8-bit art thing particularly fascinating because as a kid growing up playing those games, I remember using my imagination to fill in the blanks that the rudimentary graphics were unable to fill. What these artists have done is essentially given physical form to their own imaginary interpretations of subjects that figure very strongly in today’s pop cultural tableau. My camera is a piece of shit so please enjoy these pictures, most of which I cribbed from our friends over at Joysiq.com!

About ten years ago, I read about a Gameboy based synthesizer in a computer music magazine. It seemed cool at the time, but 200$ was a completely prohibitive price for me then, and I forgot that it existed. Recently though, I read more about using Gameboys for music and decided to explore the world of the emulated game boy sequencer/synths, the most famous of which is Little Sound DJ (LSD). I've spent some time with soft synth NES emulators (mainly Jack Dark's) and wanted to mess around with something close to the original.

What follows is a quick but hopefully through tutorial about setting up and using Little Sound DJ. Hopefully you will find it useful in your lo-fi explorations.

1. Install The Gameboy Advance Emulator BGB

The BGB emulator was the only emulator I could find to download, fortunately it is very easy to use and seems stable.

BGB is an Gameboy Advance emulator. if you've never used an emulator for a game system before, they are programs you install on your computer that can mimic the hardware and OS of a game platform. This mimicry is emulation, and it allows you to run this game system's games.

Once you've downloaded BGB, it's on to step two.

2. Getting Little Sound DJ for Gameboy

LSD's physical cartridges are no longer produced, but you can download a ROM of LSD at their website (see "How to Get it" for details). They charge two dollars to download a fully working version of the ROM, but you can also download a demo that has its save feature disabled.

Once you've installed Little Sound DJ, you can open it with BGB. To do this, just start up BGB and choose "Load ROM..." (see BGB's included HTML manual for more on BGB's controls). You will see that LSD is a tracker with four channels (if you have ever used Renoise you will find LSD familiar) and it includes an arpeggiator, a synthesizer, and a drum machine with various Roland samples.

3. Glitch Away

I decided to record LSD's output into Ableton Live in order to use it to make samples; to do this, I routed my headphone output into an instrument line in. Little Sonic DJ produces a variety of glitchy sounds that can definitely be useful, and I think that it's unorthodox interface might provide an interesting contrast to the familiarity and sterility of your usual VSTs. LSD also has considerable depth if you are interested in learning more about it (LSD's manuals are here).

Have fun with Little Sonic DJ--you might even end up making entire songs in it, like the Swedish electo pop duo Puss.

Today we take break with a coupple of rounds on the famous course in California.

Now I'm not very critical against any golf themed game for being too boring. But tihs title came out pretty bland. For this I would recommend Lee Trevino's Fighting Golf. I once owned that game and I loved it.

Hope you enjoyed the ride.

I definitely do not knit enough geeky things. I've been meaning to knit the Space Invader socks from Knitty.com

for ages:

Oh and Jundt, I haven't forgotten about your Houndstooth scarf. (Where's my kitchen island?)
